Taper bush and hub

April 19, 2013

Bit of progress with the taper bush and hub , both now machines to 1.5 degrees , just have to split the taper and clearance the hub for the other bolts heads .

im inordinately pleased with these because i only use the lathe once every two years and regard myself as an abject amateur..

A grin and a grill

April 18, 2013

some more pics of me being an idiot ….

usual steering position for almost any corner i fear ..

me trying not to laugh ..

i picked up a grill last night , off a daimler conquest 1956 ,which might do …

And then the hub…

April 18, 2013

Ahhhh Robert, I like! At first when you posted OPEN WHEEL all i could see was a cross between The Mormon Meteor and Chitty ChittyBang Bang…….
I like this ALOT!.
Got me thinking if i were to connect 6 Harley motors together i could have one hell of a V 12 🙂
Just can’t wait to see this project mature……

Rick

hi rick, yup ,that does look nice and scary lol.
i am presently investigating these

http://www.fennerdrives.com/b-loc/

to see if i can do away with re-keying the crank ,and just clamp onto it …i have made a crank hub from steel , but i have to see if there’s enough room in it for an internal ‘b loc’ .

this afternoon i hope to be off and disemboweling a transit van for its box, flywheel ,clutch etc ,in the rain …alone…with the worms . 😉

Robert

MORNING ALL ,

well, here is the hub i butchered from an old bit of plate ,en3 so not super tensile , but fairly thick and strong .

so then ,after researching the whole locking hub idea , i concluded that it may be possible to make my hub a locker , by machining a taper inside it ,then making a split tapered collet to lock it to the crank ….

i needed a good grade of steel for the collect ,so utilised an old mini primary gear ,that was HARD ,but since through the case hardening it machined nicely ,albeit in thin slices of a few thou at a time …..

i decided on a 1.5 degree taper for max lockingness /barstardnosity to get off again features …

i now have to machine the inside of it to the crank dia of 1 11/16th or around 42.8mm i think it was , but the gear is already 42.3 inside so not too bad , only fun is half inside is case hardened and half not !

then it’s on to machining out the inside of the hub with the 1.5 degrees .

i now have a transit mt75 box and flywheel , which , i was happy to see ,was double drilled for a much bigger clutch cover ,and can take a 10.5” clutch …nice!!

What’s going on?

April 15, 2013

You Sir are “wired” different than . . . oh I don’t know! LOL

I saw your pics on Facebook and was going to post some here to let everyone know what you were up to but figured I better not 😆
Bruce

thats ok bruce , laugh at me or with me ,any laughter is good ,there not enough in the world . 😉

More Robert More PLEASE!
Rick

oh, alright then , if you insist 😀

so my train of thought went thusly ,bit bored of minis ,had a very nasty experience with a 1960 barn mini i bought and restored then found out wasnt owned by who i bought it off.so thought , what would i find really fun to drive ,not super fast like the tvr ,or my mini but just plain good old fashioned fun.

and i thought hmm ,an old open wheel type 1940’s race car on the rd would be fun ,big rope steering wheel and so on .

then i found a 95 taxi down the magic scrap yard ,where if you remember i got my flow fan . so a bit of negociation and i got the chassis and the reg docs . so in about minus 10 i went down, and in a day took off the body ,and my good friend big john towed it …on a trailer…. up to my place 25 miles away .

so now to engines ,hmm ,well , these jag 24 v straight 6 engines ,with ally block , are very cheap ,and seem to last a long time ,so i got a couple of those , i had one in my garden for about 5 years so that gave me 2 to use and one spare .

now i am trying to create a straight 12 from the 2 engines , coupling them with a rubber donut out of a prop ,after a lot of research to see if thats feasable ….finding a twin engined rod with one in between 2 500 bhp sbc was encouraging !

the idea is to make a remote flywheel clutch gearbox assembly behind the crossmember too ,but like a alfa romeo alfetta/75/gtv from the 80’s.

i will bung up some more pics this evo if you want ?

projected power is 250 for the back engine ,and 225 for the front ,and thats as they are in normal form ,with a long snakey exhaust and 12 bellmounths it may be more . so far the thing weighs in at 500kg chassis and 165 kg per engine ,so it may come in at under a ton . ooof ,on old 7.5 16 tyres i think it will be a traction nightmare !! 😈

its called medusa for all the pipes etc , and i want to get veronica to paint me a ww2 girl on the side with snakey hair. on the number plate it will say ”TWINS BASIL””

Medusa and the two engines

April 11, 2013

it was time to gather some engines together.

I had in storage a xj40 running gear for about 5 years , so manhandled that engine out of here .

Aquired another xj40 lump from the scrappie , and started lining things up to see what might fit where !

MEDUSA

April 3, 2013

hi chaps ,

new endeavour/disaster…

My train of thought went thusly, bit bored of minis and thought, what would i find really fun to drive, not super fast like the tvr, or my mini but just plain good old-fashioned fun.

Here’s the victim before surgery, poor little thing doesn’t know whats in store for it 🙁

it’s going to love it 🙂

Even came with a sexy wooden steering wheel !!(bit small for full vintage ” I cannot control this thing” type driving though, something thin and ungrippable, without a good lashing of hemp, is more appropriate .)

trying to work out how to get the body off down the yard …in -4c….. brisk.

a few big bolts and basically hacking off everything else rubbery, and it’s off ..

chassis naked at last , interestingly on the scales at the yard it was 480kg , much lighter than i expected .

some quite nice deco esque features to it ,

say goodbye to your mama ,its time for the big adventure ,,you’ll love 500 bhp .

Home at last! having driven the Astra running on 2 cylinders for 25 miles, followed by John tearing up at every junction due to the raw LPG coming out of my exhaust pipe, oh we/I laughed!!
